Tundra Swans - Sacramento River Delta

This photo was taken en route to Cosumnes River Preserve, along Highway 12 in the Sacramento River Delta. A huge group of Tundra Swans -- hundreds -- landed in a flooded field to rest and feed. Driving through this area in the winter is probably the closest any of us will get to the pre-industrial Bay Area -- where wildlife in the millions populated the wetlands and delta areas. In the mornings and late afternoons, you'll see enormous flocks of ducks, geese, swans and cranes covering the sky.
