Cavallo Point Lodge

The Cavallo Point Lodge is a number of entities in one. It offers accomodations for visitors, while striving to retain the local interest that's sustained Fort Baker as a walkers' and bikers' destination up until this point -- as well as a family destination in the form of the Bay Area Discovery Museum. (All of this, of course, after Fort Baker's long run as a military installation.)

Because our forts and military housing are located on some of the most scenic plots of Bay Area land, we're fortunate to have retained some semblance of wild park in what could have been an over-developed waterfront.

Both the Presidio and Fort Baker have to achieve a balance of financial self-sufficiency while preserving the unique elements these places offer for humans and wildlife alike. And with that proposition comes (sometimes) controversy and diligence on the part of those who care enough to see these areas developed in a conscientious way.

Cavallo Point and Environmental Awareness

According to information provided by the venue, Cavallo Point aims to engender some affiliation with the nature of the local area. To that end, visitors can hike the nearby trails, explore the bay by sea kayak, rent bikes or take various classes.

And with the launch of the Institute at Golden Gate in autumn 2008, the area will become a collaboration site for world environmental leaders and others working toward sustainable planetary solutions.

Those of us who treasure the nature and wildlife of our local parks always wait with fingers tightly crossed -- that the joint goals of habitat protection and human activity can proceed with the degree of sustainability and respect that an area this precious deserves.
