Cavallo Point at Fort Baker
There are those who don't want to see any development on national park lands -- which is understandable, when you consider the initial proposal for the development at Fort Baker included an unpopular plan for a 350-room hotel.
Pressure from the community resulted in the current incarnation of Cavallo Point which opened in the spring of 2008. It's a smaller plan with a stated commitment to the local environment and to sustainability.
If you've communed with the gorgeous setting at Fort Baker, you'll understand both the desire to keep it pristine and traffic-free -- as well as the draw to revitalize the former military post in a way that respects the natural setting, while inviting people to enjoy and appreciate this jewel near the Golden Gate.
