Buffalo Bill Cody Art Exhibit by Thom Ross
Ocean Beach - San Francisco - September 2008
Depending on the time of day, you'll see a row of 120 silhouettes against a backlit sky -- or a series of vivid and life-sized figures created by artist Thom Ross. Ross's temporary exhibit at Ocean Beach is a re-creation of a 1902 photo that features Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show, photographed at the same location below the Cliff House in San Francisco.
When we visited the exhibit, Ross was on hand to discuss his two-year project, in a friendly repartee with all who stopped by. The artist, raised in Sausalito, transported the figures from his Seattle home, by way of moving trucks parked nearby.
The 1902 photograph upon which the exhibit is based, was displayed at the site for visual comparison.
See a reproduction of the original photo in a short San Francisco Chronicle piece about the exhibition.
