San Francisco Wine Bars & Shops
If your mother loves a wine tasting, take her to one of the many wine bars around town. This wine bar guide will help you get started if you don't already have your own favorites.
See a list of San Francisco wine shops (by neighborhood) to select a nice bottle on the way to your event.
Berkeley & Oakland Tastings
In the East Bay, you'll find an assortment of tasting rooms, wine and other. You can make a day trip of it by taking the Ferry and sampling some wine at Dashe Cellars tasting room on 4th Street in Oakland (near the Jack London Ferry Terminal).
You can also sample at Rosenblum Cellars in the winery's Alameda tasting room ( close to the Alameda Ferry Terminal).
If your mom is into alternative celebrations and dry martinis, Alameda is also home to Hangar One Vodka "craft distillers" with a vodka tasting room.
Farther north in West Berkeley is the Takara Sake Museum and Tasting Room, just steps from a nice meal on Fourth Street.
Wine Country
For a special meal out of town -- with beautiful ambiance -- Maja Wood, About's Guide to Santa Rosa, has some restaurant choices in Sonoma County.
If Mother's Day this year will be a more intimate outing for two, Maja also has some favorite romantic wineries in Sonoma and Napa.
For ideas on how to best use your hours in Napa, see Betsy Malloy's spend a day in Napa guide, at About's California for Visitors site.
Bay Area Day Trips
One of my favorite Bay Area day or weekend trip websites -- with more information on trips to Sonoma and Napa -- is 71Miles. 71Miles is written by John Vlahides who personally recommends (or nudges you away from) destinations, activities and dining around the Bay Area.
