where puppies & kittens are seeking to be adopted.

If your biggest gift dilemma right now is what to get someone who has everything, it's time to take a break. Stop pondering, and instead give to those who are in need. Glide, which has been sorting and distributing toys this week and which serves special meals on Christmas Eve and Christmas to the city's poor and marginalized, is short of volunteers for both projects. The San Francisco SPCA needs help with greeting and guiding spectators at Macy's windows, which house cute dogs and cats that are up for adoption. For details, check our guide to volunteering during the holidays.
When you've got that inner glow that comes from being helpful, you can return to tackling your gift list. Our holiday gift guide has ideas you may not have thought of--for charitable gifts, locally made and one-of-a-kind items, and places to shop that are not malls or department stores.
Other info you need this time of year--where are the best Christmas lights in town, when the Embarcadero ice rink closes, holiday shows for kids or adults, free holiday events, etc.--is in our San Francisco Holiday Guide.
