GGNRA Big Year Celebration

Thursday January 8, 2009
A year ago, the GGNRA launched its Endangered Species Big Year competition, challenging participants to observe 33 endangered and threatened species in the park system, then take a specific conservation action in conjunction with each animal. One example: Observe a Brown Pelican, then participate in a beach cleanup day to help eliminate the entanglements of fishing line and trash that threaten these birds.

Now, the results are in. And three people share $3000 in prizes for their accomplishments in this race. There's a ceremony at Crissy Field to honor the winners -- this Saturday, January 10, from 1p to 4p.

The prize winners are:

  • Liam O'Brien (San Francisco County) - Broadway actor and author of the forthcoming The Flying Pansies
  • Steve Price (Marin County) - Branding expert (Blackberry, Pentium, Powerbook)
  • David Seaborg (Alameda County) - Son of famous Berkeley physicist for whom the element Seaborgium is named
The celebration includes free food from Arizmendi Bakery, a free 2009 nature almanac from WildNature and free subscriptions to Bay Nature Magazine for 50 participants. Afterwards, bird experts will lead a short hike to search for the Western Snowy Plover.

Location: Crissy Field Center, 603 Mason Street at Halleck, Presidio, San Francisco (Jan 10 - 1p to 4p)
