Hornblower Introduces Hybrid Passenger Vessel
A number of designs were considered for this system. Instrumental in the decision were the weather patterns of San Francisco Bay, as well as alternative energy sources available to us here. This diagram illustrates how that energy conversion takes place between the ten-foot-tall wind turbines, a solar array on the top deck, and the Tier 2 marine diesel generators. (Tier 2 is an EPA designation relating to emission control standards.)
The building materials of the vessel itself include LEED-certified carpeting containing post-consumer recycled materials. Interior signage is printed on Plyboo, a composite material which doesn't contain some of the harmful chemicals off-gassed by traditional products. Vodka drinkers will be happy to note the countertops made of recycled Skyy vodka bottles. The green design also incorporates LED lighting, which use just a fraction of the energy required by standard bulbs.
The Hornblower Hybrid will be in service for chartered and private events come January 2009. Full passenger service to Alcatraz and Angel Islands will begin in March of 2009.
