Remembering Harvey Milk
Monday October 27, 2008
On Tuesday, San Francisco commemorates the life of Harvey Milk in two distinct formats: cinema and transit vehicles. The Gus Van Sant biopic Milk, starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, has its world premiere at the Castro Theatre on October 28. And, on the same day, a San Francisco streetcar will serve as a mobile tribute to Milk when PCC streetcar No. 1051 is dedicated to him at 11am.
Harvey Milk was serving on the city's Board of Supervisors when he was assassinated in 1978. He was an early Muni advocate, and will be the second individual in San Francisco honored with a streetcar. Local columnist Herb Caen was the first.
