Cinema Supper Club Celebrates Berlin
The new Cinema Supper Club series launches on October 23 at Legion of Honor -- this time featuring Berliner Film Fest. In conjunction with the exhibition The State Museums of Berlin and the Legacy of James Simon, the five-week Supper Club agenda features films shot or set in Berlin. The roster: Metropolis (October 23), Cabaret (October 30), Grand Hotel (November 6), Run Lola Run (November 13), and Wings of Desire (November 20).
The series opener, Fritz Lang's silent sci fi flick Metropolis, is a sobering depiction of class struggle, projected through Lang's subterranean imagery and industrial choreography. The film is steeped in visual and philosophical contrasts, at once presenting the heights and depths of human achievement. It's a definite 'yes' on the classic film check list, and apropos in many ways of modern themes. (Try getting on a crowded commuter train and see if that doesn't evoke a few parallels.)
