Angel Island Fire - Historic Structures Spared

Monday October 13, 2008
Update: By Monday afternoon, the Angel Island fire was 75 percent contained. Firefighters expect to stay on the island for several more days. Four hundred acres have burned, half the island's acreage.

The fire that swept from Mount Livermore and across Angel Island last night was just 20 percent contained today at 8:00am. Although the cause of the fire is under investigation, according to a KTVU report, there is some speculation that a bonfire might have been at the source. The brushfire had burned 250 acres by this morning -- on the 750-acre island, state park, and historical site.

Firefighters from around the Bay Area are joining the battle against the blaze, along with three helicopters and plans for two air tankers today. The image below shows the structures on the east side of the island, intact on Monday morning.
