KTVU news reports that Big Sur is all but deserted of tourists as the fire in Los Padres National Forest moves closer to beloved spots like Nepenthe -- and blankets the area with smoke and ash.
And when I speak of beloved human institutions, that's not to suggest Los Padres isn't beloved as well. It's a state treasure, with 220 million acres in the Central Coast mountains. That's two million acres varied ecosystems, almost 500 species of fish and wildlife, and 23 threatened or endangered species among those.
If you're interested in how wildfires can affect our local wildlife, take a look at this short video.
In Lake County, the Walker Fire has burned more than 14,000 acres with no immediate end in sight, and with residents miles away driven indoors for the acrid air.
These are just two of the almost 1000 fires burning in California, inspiring every fire-related cliche in the headlines -- and covering the Bay Area with a mixture of smoke and fog. Some areas are obviously worse than others. And anyone living in zones hit significantly by smoke, is advised to stay inside. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District posts regular updates on air quality in your district.
