Shop Bay Area Farmers Markets

Last week, I brought home a flat of unbelievable strawberries. They tasted like the wild strawberries I used to pick in my childhood garden.

Our farmers markets are obviously an important way to support local, organic and sustainable farms. But the proof is also in the strawberries. There's some self-interest involved when the produce flavors harken back to an era before mass-produced fruit and vegetables had the taste bred right out of their colorful selves.

Take advantage of the many weekend farmers markets in San Francisco and around the Bay. When you buy locally you:

  1. Support small farmers who are in a constant struggle to sustain in an era of large agribusiness
  2. Help the environment when your food travels shorter distances, using fewer resources
  3. Promote humane treatment toward animals, since many vendors engage in humane farming practices
  4. Enjoy fresher, tastier produce, straight from the farm *
