Myanmar Cyclone: How to Help From the Bay Area

Update on Mynamar relief efforts - May 9, 2008:

As you've probably read, there have been problems getting aid into Mynamar due to the military junta's confiscation of aid shipments. The SF Chronicle reports that aid will resume but that relief workers are still barred entry.

I received word from GlobalGiving that they have expanded their list of funded projects in Myanmar. The new list includes two projects, run by IDE and Save the Children, that are operating within Myanmar and have Government approval to provide aid to the victims of the devastating cyclone.

==================

The San Francisco Chronicle today ran a piece about local Bay Area Burmese residents raising funds for cyclone relief.

So far, 22,464 are dead in Myanmar after the devastating Cyclone Nargis -- and 41,000 people are missing.

If you'd like to donate to the Myanmar relief funds, InterAction -- American Council for Voluntary International Action -- has a full list of organizations accepting contributions toward aid in Myanmar. At the same pages you can read InterAction's set of standards for accountability and service among the listed organizations.

Another organization, GlobalGiving is already funding two projects in Myanmar, and raising funds for a third. GlobalGiving connects people to more than 450 pre-screened grassroots charity projects around the world. You can pick projects by category or region and read the regularly posted reports on the various global projects. (Dennis Whittle, co-founder of GlobalGiving wrote about the organization at Huffington Post.)
