Bring Your Own Big Wheel 2008

Monday March 17, 2008
Bring Your Own Big Wheel Race - Easter Sunday in San Francisco (2008)

By far, the best Easter event I attended was the annual Bring Your Own Big Wheel (BYOBW) race down Lombard Street.

It was something of a guerrilla happening -- a non-event that started with a guy, an artist (John Brumit) and his salvaged Big Wheel -- which spiraled into the monstrous numbers of humans who invaded Lombard in 2007.

So, a victim of its own popularity, the Lombard renegade race moves itself to Vermont Street this year. Vermont (not Lombard) is the crookedest street in San Francisco -- with six curves in a much shorter span of distance (from 20th to 22nd).

BYOBW is still on Easter Sunday and still no rubber wheels allowed. Burn plastic or don't play.

It starts at Vermont and 20th, it's free. You can even enjoy your Easter Pimms and Easter basket first because the race doesn't happen until 5p. If you can't handle grown ups getting road rash from fast moving toys, avoid the area altogether.

See photos from the Lombard Street Bring Your Own Big Wheel event.

Go to the official Jon Brumit Bring Your Own Big Wheel website for more history and information.

As you can see, this blog post was written prior to the 2008 event so photos and video weren’t available yet. The follow up blog post on the 24th has footage from the 2008 race Footage from BYOBW 2008
