California Academy of Sciences - Last Days on Howard Street
We'll have a penguin void when the California Academy of Sciences closes its doors on Howard Street. But really -- it's a celebration -- of the Academy's new digs in Golden Gate Park. After final-day ceremonies on January 6, the animals at Howard Street will be part of the Academy's "Great Migration" back to the park. Exhibits will open again to the public in the autumn of 2008, where visitors can appreciate the sustainable design of the new Academy and the beautiful spaces for all aquarium creatures, saltwater and fresh alike.
In the meantime, if you want to participate in the closing celebration on Howard Street, bring a "housewarming" gift from the Academy's Wish List and you'll get in for free. (Hint: Orvis Guideweight Neoprene Waders would not be out of line.)
Among the 38,000 live animals making the move to the park are pythons, African penguins, electric eels, a 55-year-old alligator, and a giant sea bass. All care will be taken to transport the animals safely and in comfort.
Bon voyage scaled, feathered and electric friends. We'll see you soon under your new, living roof.
